An Experimental Characterization of Time of Arrival Accuracy for Time Synchronization of Medium Voltage Smart Grid Solutions
2019
The time synchronization of smart grid devices is a critical feature for the successful application of advanced grid monitoring and control techniques. Synchronization mechanisms based on the accurate estimation of the Time of Arrival (ToA) of network messages - sent over power line cables - are a promising solution to achieve synchronization tasks over distribution lines. In this paper, a chirp-based synchronization technique over the Medium Voltage (MV) grid has been proposed and characterized. Such approach has the benefit of not requiring the installation of a dedicated infrastructure, thanks to the exploitation of power distribution lines for the transmission of time synchronization da…
Valutazione di alcune performance diagnostiche di kit ELISA per la diagnosi sierologica di Anemia Infettiva Equina (AIE)
2012
Data on evaluation of some diagnostic parameters of all ELISA kits available in Italy for the serodiagnosis of AIE are presented and discussed. Ten laboratories were involved using a panel of 30 sera ran with 4 commercial kits and 2 in-house kits. Kits were also evaluated using a panel of sera from vaccinated animals at different days post vaccination (p.v.). All sera were also tested in agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID). The parameters evaluated were: diagnostic sensitivity (DSe) and specificity (DSp), Cohen K, weighted Cohen K, coefficient of variation (CV), accordance, concordance. Analysis of these parameters indicates that all kits have a higher sensitivity than AGID, even if a complete …

Applying system dynamics modeling to foster a cause-and-effect perspective in dealing with behavioral distortions associated with a city's performanc…
2015
This paper aims to show how applying system dynamics methodology to performance management can provide a powerful modeling perspective enabling public sector organizations to prevent, detect, and counteract behavioral distortions associated with performance measurement. A dynamic performance management approach is able to support performance management system designers in outlining and implementing a consistent set of measures that can allow public sector decision-makers to pursue sustainable organizational learning and development. This perspective implies a major shift from a static to a dynamic picture of organizational processes and results. It means framing delays between causes and ef…
System Dynamics : Theory and Applications ; Edited by Brian Dangerfield
2021
The Springer volume on “System Dynamics. Theory and Applications” (2020), edited by Brian Dangerfield, substantially contributes to strengthening the position of feedback modeling and simulation in both research and practice in various policy analysis domains. The 23 chapters, of which the book consists, cover a wide scope of fields ranging from theory and methodology (part II) to practical applications of system dynamics (SD) to solve different real-life problems (part III). In particular, the methodological chapters provide a suitable conceptual framework for the subsequent chapters which illustrate the benefits from applying SD to specific policy fields and contexts. A well-balanced mix …
Study of the material of the ATLAS inner detector for Run 2 of the LHC
2017
The ATLAS inner detector comprises three different sub-detectors: the pixel detector, the silicon strip tracker, and the transition-radiation drift-tube tracker. The Insertable B-Layer, a new innermost pixel layer, was installed during the shutdown period in 2014, together with modifications to the layout of the cables and support structures of the existing pixel detector. The material in the inner detector is studied with several methods, using a low-luminosity root s = 13 TeV pp collision sample corresponding to around 2.0 nb(-1) collected in 2015 with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. In this paper, the material within the innermost barrel region is studied using reconstructed hadronic in…
Studies on the response of a water-Cherenkov detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory to atmospheric muons using an RPC hodoscope
2020
Extensive air showers, originating from ultra-high energy cosmic rays, have been successfully measured through the use of arrays of water-Cherenkov detectors (WCDs). Sophisticated analyses exploiting WCD data have made it possible to demonstrate that shower simulations, based on different hadronic-interaction models, cannot reproduce the observed number of muons at the ground. The accurate knowledge of the WCD response to muons is paramount in establishing the exact level of this discrepancy. In this work, we report on a study of the response of a WCD of the Pierre Auger Observatory to atmospheric muons performed with a hodoscope made of resistive plate chambers (RPCs), enabling us to selec…
Design, upgrade and characterization of the silicon photomultiplier front-end for the AMIGA detector at the Pierre Auger Observatory
2021
The successful installation, commissioning, and operation of the Pierre Auger Observatory would not have been possible without the strong commitment and effort from the technical and administrative staff in Malargue. We are very grateful to the following agencies and organizations for financial support: Argentina -Comision Nacional de Energia Atomica; Agencia Nacional de Promocion Cientifica y Tecnologica (ANPCyT); Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Cientificas y Tecnicas (CONICET); Gobierno de la Provincia de Mendoza; Municipalidad de Malargue; NDM Holdings and Valle Las Lenas; in gratitude for their continuing cooperation over land access; Australia -the Australian Research Council; Braz…
Characterisation and mitigation of beam-induced backgrounds observed in the ATLAS detector during the 2011 proton-proton run
2013
This paper presents a summary of beam-induced backgrounds observed in the ATLAS detector and discusses methods to tag and remove background contaminated events in data. Triggerrate based monitoring of beam-related backgrounds is presented. The correlations of backgrounds with machine conditions, such as residual pressure in the beam-pipe, are discussed. Results from dedicated beam-background simulations are shown, and their qualitative agreement with data is evaluated. Data taken during the passage of unpaired, i.e. non-colliding, proton bunches is used to obtain background-enriched data samples. These are used to identify characteristic features of beam-induced backgrounds, which then are …
